About biofilm process


Biofilm process is one of various wastewater treatment method, and it is a method to attach microorganisms onto carrier and to make them decompose contaminants. The microorganisms attached on surface of carrier is called biofilm.
Activated sludge process is a process to generate small floating activated sludge and microorganisms in wastewater, and to decompose organic matters with them. It is also called suspended growth process and its processing method is different from biofilm process’s.
Also, biofilm process is a process to generate biofilm on surface of carrier and decompose organic matters by making the biofilm to contact with wastewater. It is called attached growth process as well.
Biofilm process is a method to purify wastewater using microorganisms, like activated sludge process and suspended growth process. Difference from suspended growth process is that microorganisms are attached on specific carrier before being filled reaction tanks for purification. If it is done in this way, aerobic bacteria grow on surface of the carrier and anaerobic bacteria grow inside of the carrier, therefore, several types of bacteria can be added into wastewater. Since microorganisms which have decomposed contaminants can also be decomposed by other microorganisms, they are hardly annihilated.
Therefore, this biofilm process is often used for purification of sludge whose condition depends on the season. When amounts of microorganisms growing on carriers increased too much, some of them are peeled off spontaneously and the amount is adjusted to current condition autonomously. Therefore, some processes which is required in suspended growth process such as returning sludge and controlling amount of sludge in reaction tank are not necessary, and maintenance is easy. However, speed of purifying water quality is slower in biofilm process than in suspended growth process. While microorganisms grow unlimitedly in suspended growth process by being fed, microorganisms can grow only on the surface of carrier in biofilm process. Number of microorganisms becomes small compared with suspended growth process. Also, even though its amount is small, sludge adheres on carrier and the carrier needs to be collected and cleaned regularly.In case that large amount of strongly contaminated sludge needs to be treated and purified, suspended growth process has advantage.

Not like suspended growth process, odor and noxious insects easily generated by neglecting maintenance since wastewater faces outdoor air more often. Plastics, ceramics, or oyster shell which is cheep are used for the carrier.

■ Sludge drying

However, moisture content is normally more than 80% and the sludge still has adhesiveness and stickiness. Also, latter processes are not easy because of influence of flocculants.
