There are various activated sludge methods in wastewater treatment though, this article is about fluidized bed method which is one of three types of biofilm processes.
|■ About Fluidized bed method|
This is a method to purify wastewater by filling carriers (contact materials, filer materials) in reaction tanks and generate biofilm, which is a film of microorganisms, on the carrier to decompose organic matter in the water. Since the carriers are always being agitated and flowing by aeration, they contact with wastewater efficiently and the process is performed stably. For example, objects made with plastic having a lot of holes is used as carrier and biofilm is generated on their surface while they flow and move within wastewater by aeration. Biofilm gets oxygen from air and gets pollution components containing organic matters from wastewater, then perform purification by decomposing with aerobic oxidation. Microorganisms which grew too much are peeled off spontaneously and settled at settling tank, however, they are not returned and disposed as waste sludge. Waste sludge is discharged after passing through final settling tank and disinfection apparatus. Waste sludge, on the other hand, is processed in proper ways after being condensed and dewatered, then. This method can be done by facilities with 1/2 to 1/3 smaller size compared with activated sludge method. Also, like other biofilm process, there is no returning sludge, therefore, operation maintenance is easy and its processes are kept stable even quantity and quality of wastewater changes.
Water in the sludge thickened in the sludge thickener tank are removed at dehydration process to a certain degree.
However, moisture content is normally more than 80% and the sludge still has adhesiveness and stickiness. Also, latter processes are not easy because of influence of flocculants.
