This article is about dissolved air flotation with aggregation which is one of various types of wastewater treatment. This is an advanced method of dissolved air flotation.

Flocculant is added to wastewater in flocculation tank and agitated to make floc by aggregating contaminants and floating matters in the wastewater. In pressure tank, pressured air is added into treated water and tiny bubbles are generated. The tiny bubbles are used in flotation tank. When bubbles are released to the atmosphere, they adhere to flocs of contaminants and floating matters, so that the flocs float up to surface. Floated flocs are called sludge(scum or floss) and collected by sludge collector. Water underneath them are discharged as treated water. Sludge separated from water (scum or floss) are collected, dehydrated and disposed, and part of treated water is sent to pressure tank and tiny bubbles are generated there. This method is often used in separation of solid and liquid for materials which have lower specific gravity than water such as oils, since it is difficult to be done with other method.
■ About Scum
Scum is a thick layer formed by the gas generated in the sludge at the drainage port or drainage channel, or generated in sludge holding tank, the septic tank, etc. Bacteria, coliform bacteria, urea splitting organism, suspended solid, fiber, oil/fat and carbonic acid gas float up, and bubbles form spongy thick films on surface.

Water in the sludge thickened in the sludge thickener tank are removed at dehydration process to a certain degree.
However, moisture content is normally more than 80% and the sludge still has adhesiveness and stickiness. Also, latter processes are not easy because of influence of flocculants.
