Sludge arise in wastewater treatment plant passes through condensation process first, then enter to next process called conditioning. These processes are pre-treatment steps of dehydration process which comes next, and they make sludge easier to be separated into solid matters and water depending on each types of dehydrator used in dehydration process.
Conditioning is a process to make large amount of water which is contained in sludge and is difficult to be detached into a condition in which it can be detached easily, and chemicals or heat is used in this process. Also, this process changes condition of sludge into one that sludge can be dehydrated easily.
In the conditioning process, usually flocculation is used to make sludge easier to be dehydrated.
For the flocculation, chemicals are used to bond particles in sludges, to generate flocs to make sludge easier to be separated from water, and to improve efficiency of dehydration. Among several types of sludge, organic sludge contains a lot of organic matter which have high affinity to water and its particles has various size and shapes, therefore, treatment in dehydration process which dehydrate with pressure is more difficult. For this reason, condition of sludge needs to be made stable by adding chemical.
For chemicals used in the flocculation process, there are two main types which are 2-pack injection type and 1-pack injection type. Types of chemical and injection method is decided depends on types of sludge and dehydrator, condition of sludge, etc.
2-pack injection type
Small flocs which can be flocculated easily are generated by using inorganic or organic flocculants. Additionally, large aggregated flocs are generated by using anionic and nonionic polymer flocculant.
1-pack injection type
Only cationic polymer flocculant is injected since it can generate whole type of flocs from small floc to aggregated flocs.
Water in the sludge thickened in the sludge thickener tank are removed at dehydration process to a certain degree.
However, moisture content is normally more than 80% and the sludge still has adhesiveness and stickiness. Also, latter processes are not easy because of influence of flocculants.
