Then, what is surface tension?
Surface tension is energy comes from object’s characteristics which tend to make its surface as small as possible.
Surface is also called interface though, it is called interface when two phases such as gas and liquid, liquid and liquid, liquid and solid, solid and solid, or solid and gas are touching, and it is called surface especially when one of the phases is gas. Surface tension is surface free energy per unit area of surface where solid or liquid are contacting gas, and it can be said one kind of interface tensions as well.
Molecules of liquid can move comparatively freely and it forms a sphere in case there is no external force since it has characteristics which tend to make its surface area as small as possible. Between each molecule within liquid, pulling forces called intermolecular forces is acting and each molecule are pulling each other. In case of molecule at liquid surface (interface between liquid and gas) on the other hand, intermolecular forces are acting between molecule of gas though, molecule are always pulled into liquid which has larger intermolecular force because of its overwhelmingly higher density. This is surface tension and you can see that force pulling inside to shrink the surface is acting when you observe liquid. There are several methods to measure this surface tension, and object hardly get wet when surface tension of liquid is large.
Also, surface tension gets lower as temperature get higher. This is because movement of molecules becomes more active and molecules repel each other as temperature get higher. It becomes easier to get wet as temperature get higher.
In addition, surfactant such as detergent makes surface active and surface/interface tension becomes extremely low. This surfactant makes materials easier to be mixed together even they normally cannot be, and it is used for removing oil stains of laundry, for example.
Surface tension differs in each kind of liquid, and surface tension at celsius 20 degrees of mercury is 476.00mN/n in contract with 72.75mN/n of water’s. It can be said that mercury is easier to form a spherical body and more difficult to make something wet compared with water.
If interface tension of boundary surface between liquid and solid is known, contact angle showing degree of wetness can be calculated.
