This is article is about oxidation ditch method which is one of various types of activated sludge process of waste water treatment. This process is also a water treatment method improved from conventional activated sludge process.

■ About oxidation ditch method (OD method) 


Oxidation ditch method is developed in the Netherlands to treat dairy waste water with as simple facilities as possible. This waste water treatment method doesn’t need the first clarifier which is used in conventional activated sludge process as well. Aeration is done with small power by making reaction tank and aeration tank to be circular or oval shaped endless water channel where water can circulate, and advantage of this method is that maintenance cost can be kept low. By giving certain level of flow speed to whole water channel, oxygen demanded for aeration process is supplied as sewage and activated sludge are being mixed and circulated.
Activated sludge is prevented to be settled down by being mixed and agitated with wastewater in the water channel. Since it needs large area to be installed, this method is used in small scale sewage facilities located in suburban area.

Types of waste water treatment / sludge drying, slurry drying, waste drying


■ Sludge drying


Water in the sludge thickened in the sludge thickener tank are removed at dehydration process to a certain degree.
However, moisture content is normally more than 80% and the sludge still has adhesiveness and stickiness. Also, latter processes are not easy because of influence of flocculants.
